Rapids got off to a quick lead when Dom Deguiseppi came in from the right midfield position, gained possession of the face-off and took it the length of the field to score an un-assisted goal, and give Grand Rapids a 1-0 lead. Edinas patience and experience paid off, however, as they tied the game halfway through the first period, then continued to build on the lead. Rapids in-experience showed as they took several penalties, putting them shorthanded on a number of Edinas scoring chances.
