What's Happening at the Grand Rapids Area Library

October 2009

NEW!  Saturday Story Times for kids start this Saturday at 10:30!

Each Saturday morning we'll have a story time for kids. Kids of all ages are welcome!

October 3 and 10   10:30 am: 

Preschool Story Time*
*Preschool story times focus on preschool skills, but all ages are welcome to attend

 

October 6th   7 pm  Ghost Stories and Legends of Minnesota 

Author Michael Norman talks about his book: The Nearly Departed: Minnesota Ghost Stories and Legends

 

Kids' events:

Book Times on Mondays at 9:30 and 10:30

Have a fun time with books, rhymes and songs, plus a snack and a craft.

 

Monday, October 19, 3:30. Kid's Art Workshop with the Creativity Tank 21, 3:30   Drawing in the style of Ed Emberly.  Learn how to draw based on Ed Emberly's books. This is another fun art workshop for kids in grades K-4.  Pre-registration is required.  Call 327-8823

Fishing Fun for all ages

Thursday, October 15 @ 7:00 p.m. - Ice Fishing... Through a generous grant from the Friends of the St. Paul Library, the Library will host 2009 Minnesota Book Award Finalist, Greg Breining discussing his book, A Hard Water World.
Other activities around this program include:

Making a fish craft in the Children's Library on Oct 28 at 3:30 - for school age children.

Guess the fish in a jar the whole month of October and win prizes.

Greet Wally the Walleye on loan from DNR Fisheries, and learn more about fish.

Scavenger Hunt in the library for teens the whole month of October - win prizes for completing the hunt and have your name entered in a drawing for tackle box.

Visit a display of lures, rods, reels and fishing paraphernalia on loan from Bob Halver.

Meet the Friends of the Library and join this important organization that supports the library! National Friends of the Library Membership Drive is Oct 18-24. The Grand Rapids Area Friends will be Fishing for New Friends during Oct. They will provide icy treats at the program and be around the library on Oct 15 to meet and greet interested new members.

Computer Classes

We are collaborating with Northern Community Internet to provide two series of workshops on using internet tools.

Going Online Series

Begins October 8 and covers, email, using online tools such as calendars, document creation and photo sharing, social networking tools such as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, and doing online searching. 

Using Online Tools to Build Your Business

Starts October 6th and is aimed at helping businesses learn about online tools that can be used for promoting a business.

Register through Community education at www.getlearning.org.  You can register for one class or the entire series.

Teen Read Week October 18-24 Read Beyond Reality

Friday, October 16  Twilight movie showing

Prizes!  Stop in Teen Universe and answer the question of the month for a chance to win a prize! 

Friday, October 23 3:30-4:30 Teen Book Talk

          Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Stop at the Reference Desk to pick up a copy of the book.

Thursday, October 22nd at noon - African Adventures with Mary Shideler.

A repeat of Mary's popular September program about her travels in Africa.

Wednesday, October 21st  12:00 noon: Great Decisions Discussion Series with the topic Cuba  We have copies of the briefing books for use in the Library and available for checkout.

Food for Fines!  All month long.

Up to $10.00 in recent fines will be waived with the donation of food items.  Donations benefit 2nd Harvest Food Shelf.
