What's Happening at the Grand Rapids Area  Library

This week at the library:

Tuesday, January 13 at 5:15 Local E-Democracy meeting

The E- democracy project provides a way for people to discuss local issues online using email. It encourages civil and thoughtful discussion about what is happening at the local level.

Northern Community Internet Project and the Library invite everyone interested in starting a local E-democracy discussion to a planning meeting.

Tuesday, January 13 at 9 am downloadable audio books for iPods become available!  If you've been waiting for books for your iPod or Mac, check out the audio books catalog.  There are 248 titles in the format that is downloadable to a Mac or PC and transferrable to an iPod or iPhone.  The audio book catalog is accessible from the Library's web page at www.grandrapids.lib.mn.us  (click on Online Resources on the left)

Teen Events

Friday, January 16th 3:30 -4:30 pm  Book ClubTouching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, pick up a copy at the reference desk.

Stop in to the Teen Universe before January 27th to enter this month's contest. 

 

Saturday, January 17th   1:00 pm Children's book illustrator Stephanie Mirocha

The illustrator of "My Little Book of Manatees" will talk about the process of illustrating a book.  This program is for kids and adults. 

 

The Library will be closed on Monday, January 19th in honor of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

 

Later this month:

Wednesday, January 28th  7:00 pm Author Aaron Brown, will visit the Men's Book Group

Everyone is welcome for a discussion of his book Overburden: Modern Life on the Iron Range

 

Thursday, January 29th  1:00 pm Photos of China presentation by Mary Shideler

            Bring a lunch and learn about Mary's recent trip

 

Friday, January 30th 12:30  EllyAnne Geisel, curator of The Apron Chronicles

Ms Geisel will talk about collecting aprons and the stories that go with them.  The exhibit is at Iron world from February 1- March 30.

 

Iron Range Reads (February):  The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, by Bill Bryson

We have multiple copies of this hilarious memoir of growing up in Des Moines in the '50s.  We also have copies available in large print and on CD.

 

Winter reading program Slide into a good book  continues

Kids can sign up and receive a reading log to complete by January 31. Finishers can pick out a free book to keep! Finishers are also eligible for a Baby Steps Coupon. 

ECFE Book Times for preschoolers and their families have started again on Mondays 9:30 & 10:30.  Because we are closed on January 19th, the next sessions will be Monday, January 26.
